The West End in London and Broadway in New York are two places which are renowned for hosting, without doubt some of the best musical and theatrical productions. Some of the best films which have been on the big screen, are featured in these shows. Shows such as Shrek, Lion King and Phantom of the opera are a firm favourite with people visiting either London or New York. Getting tickets for these shows can be at times extremely difficult, with the most popular shows being booked up months in advance. Most of these theatres have a web directory entry.

One of the longest running shows is Cats, this production saw Andrew Lloyd Webber compose the music. This musical is a firm favourite and has been watched by many since it first opened in the West End of London back in 1981, one year after Cats went on to open in Broadway in 1982. The show itself had Trevor Nunn as director and Gillian Lynne as choreographer. This show has won a variety of different awards, the show ran for an amazing 21 years in the West End of London, and for 18 years on Broadway in New York.

Grease is another firm favourite, and although has not run continuously has been around since 1972. This musical is set in the 1950’s and takes its name from the working class youngsters in the United States of that era, known as greasers. The musical itself is set in Rydell High School in the year 1959, and tells the story of 10 working class teenagers, all who have different worries and goals. The early productions of the show were much more raw than the tamed down version which we see on stage nowadays. Grease has been a firm favourite both on the shows and proved a massive hit on the cinema, making Olivia Newton John and John Travolta house hold names. The songs for the musical were released as an album, and are still heard and played today. A hugely popular film which will never age, due to its ability to make people feel good.

Mamma Mia is a production which is written by the two lead males in Abba. In the 1970’s Abba were one of the biggest pop groups in the charts not only here in England, but Abba had global success. Formed in 1972 this Swedish pop group gained international status and popularity by churning out catchy song lyrics, which got people singing, the band themselves were two males which were Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, the female singers were Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstag, the initials of their names were used to form the name ABBA. They were not only band mates but both couples were married Benny to Frida and Agnetha to Bjorn, unfortunately due to the bands success and the ever demanding schedule, both of the marriages failed, and this started to reflect in their music, but the songs which were made at the time of the marriage break up were possibly some of the most successful songs that the band had. The musical Mamma Mia first opened its doors in London in April 1999, this production has all the popular Abba songs in it. The end bit of the production is fantastic because this is the part where the audience get to join the cast in a sing along and the songs Mamma Mia, Waterloo and Dancing Queen are all performed.
